Moving a picture? Remove hanging strips slowly.

3 min readLYNX Construction DIY Notebook

Changing your wall arrangement should start with identifying the hardware behind the picture. Stretch-release strips, ordinary foam tape and adhesive hooks can look similar, but their removal instructions differ. This tip applies to Command picture-hanging strips with accessible stretch tabs, not every adhesive product. Find the instructions for your exact strip before touching the frame. Careful removal can reduce the chance of wall damage, but an old or weak paint finish may still lift.

What you’ll need

Take it step by step

  1. Clear a landing place for the picture and inspect the setup. If it is heavy, awkward or beyond comfortable reach, ask for help instead of handling it alone.
  2. For the paired picture-hanging strips described by 3M, release the frame by peeling from its bottom corners as directed. Do not yank the entire frame straight away from the wall. Set it down safely.
  3. Locate the adhesive stretch tab on each remaining wall strip. Make sure you have clear space below it. If the tab is broken or hidden, stop and consult that product’s broken-tab instructions.
  4. Hold the remaining strip as its instructions specify. Pull its tab very slowly downward, close and parallel to the wall—not out toward yourself. The referenced picture-strip instructions call for at least 15 inches of stretch to release.
  5. Repeat for the other strips. Inspect the wall without scraping or adding solvents. Use fresh strips and the correct surface, curing-time and weight instructions if you hang the picture again.
Keep this in mind

Take a photo of the package instructions before storing leftover strips. Knowing exactly which product you used makes a future decorating change much less of a guessing game.

When to ask for help

Pause if paint starts lifting, a tab snaps, the frame will not release, or the surface is crumbling. Do not improvise with a knife, heat or strong solvent; ask for product-specific removal advice or wall-repair help.
