Freshen the inside of a microwave safely.
Dried splatters can hold odors and become harder to remove after repeated heating. A quick wipe with mild soap usually handles everyday messes without harsh chemicals or abrasive pads. Always follow the cleaning section in your microwave’s manual, especially for special interior coatings.
What you’ll need
- Microwave owner’s manual
- Soft microfiber cloth or nonabrasive sponge
- Small bowl
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
- Dry towel
Take it step by step
- Turn the microwave off. If the plug is safely accessible, unplug it; otherwise leave the door open and avoid touching controls while cleaning.
- Remove the cool glass turntable and support ring only if your manual allows it. Wash them gently in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry completely.
- Dampen a soft cloth with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Wring it well so liquid cannot drip into vents or openings.
- Wipe the ceiling, walls, floor, and inside of the door. Hold the damp cloth on a stubborn spot for a moment instead of scraping.
- Wipe with a clean damp cloth, dry the interior, and reinstall the completely dry turntable parts in their correct positions.
Keep this in mind
Cover food with a microwave-safe cover that allows steam to escape. Catching splatters early makes the next cleanup much easier.
When to ask for help
Stop using the microwave and seek appliance service if the door, latch, seal, or interior coating is damaged, or if you see sparking, smoke, exposed metal, or a burning smell. Never remove the outer cover.
