Dust your blinds before reaching for a wet sponge.

Window blinds are easy to overlook when you are freshening a room. Their narrow slats collect dust, but a stronger cleaner is not automatically the answer. Start with a simple dry cleaning and check the material before adding water. Wood, fabric and vinyl do not all tolerate the same treatment. Choose an accessible window and leave the blind hanging for this quick upkeep task; taking brackets apart is unnecessary for ordinary surface dust.

What you’ll need

Take it step by step

  1. Identify the blind material and read its care instructions. Move nearby decorations out of the way so you can work without knocking anything over. Keep cords away from children.
  2. Tilt the slats so you can reach one face. Wipe lightly along each slat with a dry microfiber cloth. Support delicate slats instead of pushing them out of shape.
  3. Adjust the tilt to reach the opposite face. Refold the cloth as it picks up dust, so the clean side does the work rather than spreading yesterday’s dirt back onto the blind.
  4. For real wood, prefer a soft vacuum brush at low suction. Do not soak it. Treat fabric shades according to their own instructions instead of borrowing a vinyl-blind cleaning method.
  5. If the material permits damp cleaning, test a hidden spot first. Use a barely damp cloth for remaining marks and dry promptly. Skip abrasive cleaners and stop if the finish changes.
Keep this in mind

Make one window your stopping point. A short, repeatable upkeep job is easier to fit between larger painting, flooring or decorating projects than an all-day cleaning plan.

When to ask for help

Get advice if slats are cracked, the mounting bracket is loose, fabric is stained beyond routine dusting, or the finish transfers to your cloth. Do not force a jammed lifting mechanism.
