Clean a stainless-steel appliance exterior without streaks.

5 min readLYNX Construction DIY Notebook

Stainless-steel appliance doors collect fingerprints, drips, and cooking residue quickly. The safest first method is warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth—not an abrasive pad. Because some appliances have fingerprint-resistant coatings, always check the owner’s manual and test a hidden area before cleaning the full surface.

What you’ll need

Take it step by step

  1. Turn the appliance controls off and let nearby cooking surfaces cool. Keep liquid away from control panels, vents, seams, and openings.
  2. Look closely for the stainless-steel grain, which appears as faint horizontal or vertical lines. Plan to wipe in that direction.
  3. Mix about one teaspoon of mild dish soap into one quart of warm water. Dampen a microfiber cloth and wring it until it will not drip.
  4. Wipe gently in the direction of the grain, working in small sections. Apply cleaner to the cloth rather than spraying the appliance.
  5. Use a second cloth dampened with plain water to remove soap. Dry immediately with a clean towel, still following the grain, to reduce streaks and water spots.
Keep this in mind

Start with plain warm water on light fingerprints. Add soap only when water alone does not remove the mark.

When to ask for help

Stop and check the manual if the finish changes color, looks cloudy, or shows paint transfer. Ask for appliance service when moisture has entered controls or a panel is loose. Never use steel wool, scouring powder, or harsh cleaner unless the manufacturer specifically approves it.
