Clean a reusable metal range-hood filter.
A range hood collects airborne grease while you cook, and its filter needs regular attention. Some filters are washable metal; others contain charcoal and must be replaced rather than washed. Find the model number and read the owner’s manual before removing anything.
What you’ll need
- Range-hood owner’s manual
- Rubber gloves
- Sink or basin
- Warm water
- Mild degreasing dish soap
- Soft nonabrasive brush
- Clean towel
Take it step by step
- Turn the hood and cooktop off and let everything cool. Make sure no burner can be started while you work.
- Use the manual to identify the filter and release method. Support the filter with both hands as you unlatch it so it does not fall.
- If it is a washable metal filter, soak it in warm water with mild dish soap. Gently brush along the mesh to loosen grease. Do not wash a charcoal filter.
- Rinse the metal filter thoroughly without bending the mesh. Let it air-dry completely on a towel.
- Reinstall the dry filter in the same direction and confirm every clip or latch is secure before using the hood.
Keep this in mind
Take a quick photo before removal. It gives you an easy reference for the filter’s direction and latch position during reinstallation.
When to ask for help
Ask for appliance service if the filter is damaged, the latch will not hold, wiring is visible, the fan makes a new noise, or the hood does not draw air. Do not open the motor or electrical housing.
