Give laminate floors a light clean, not a soaking.
A muddy footprint does not mean the whole room needs a bucket of water. Start by identifying your laminate and checking its care instructions. Even water-resistant flooring has cleaning limits. A clean microfiber pad and a controlled amount of compatible cleaner make a sensible starting point for this small maintenance job.
What you’ll need
- Soft broom or floor-safe vacuum
- Clean microfiber mop pad
- Floor-approved laminate cleaner
- Soft dry cloth
Take it step by step
- Find the flooring care sheet or ask the supplier to identify the product. Confirm the cleaner is compatible. Do not choose a cleaning method solely from the floor's appearance.
- Sweep or vacuum loose grit using a floor-safe attachment. Give entrances and chair areas extra attention. Remove debris from the mop pad before starting.
- Follow the cleaner label and test in a discreet area as directed. Apply the recommended amount with the microfiber mop; do not pour liquid into joints or leave puddles.
- Work in small sections and wipe accidental excess moisture promptly. Change or clean the pad when it becomes dirty instead of spreading the same grime around.
- Allow the floor to dry before returning rugs or walking across it in dirty shoes. Store the damp mop away from the floor rather than leaving its wet pad in one spot.
Keep this in mind
Keep a dry cloth beside the cleaning kit to catch accidental sprays or spills before liquid sits along a plank joint.
When to ask for help
Ask a flooring professional about swollen edges, lifting planks, soft areas or recurring dampness. Cleaning cannot fix trapped moisture. Avoid steam and abrasives unless the flooring maker explicitly permits them.
