Clean the dryer lint screen after every load.
The dryer lint screen needs attention after every load. A clean screen supports airflow and normal drying. This quick task is different from cleaning the dryer vent or opening the appliance, which may require service. Follow your dryer manual because lint-screen locations and shapes vary by model.
What you’ll need
- Dryer Use and Care Guide
- Small trash container
- Vacuum hose attachment for loose lint outside the screen, if permitted
- Nylon brush and liquid detergent only for occasional residue cleaning
Take it step by step
- Wait until the dryer has stopped and cooled. Open the door or top access point and locate the lint screen using the manual. Never operate the dryer without the screen installed.
- Pull the screen out in the direction shown by the manufacturer. Maytag directs users to pull its common screen straight up. Avoid twisting or bending the frame.
- Roll dry lint off the screen with your fingers and place it in the trash. Maytag advises against wetting the screen for ordinary lint removal because wet lint is harder to remove.
- Inspect the mesh and frame in good light. If you see waxy residue, follow the manufacturer’s deep-cleaning directions. Maytag recommends hot water, liquid detergent, and a nylon brush, followed by a thorough rinse and complete towel drying.
- When fully dry, return the screen firmly to its proper position. If the manual permits, use a vacuum hose gently at the screen opening to collect loose lint that sits outside the screen. Do not push the attachment into hidden ductwork.
Keep this in mind
Make lint-screen cleaning part of unloading the dryer. That way the screen is ready before the next load starts.
When to ask for help
Stop using the dryer and seek qualified help if the screen is torn, the screen will not seat correctly, clothes take unusually long to dry, the dryer becomes unusually hot, or you smell burning. Those signs may indicate a deeper airflow problem.
