Clean accessible refrigerator coils safely.
Dust around a refrigerator’s condenser area can collect faster in homes with pets, busy kitchens, or nearby construction. Not every refrigerator needs homeowner coil cleaning, and some models require a technician. Check the model’s Use and Care Guide first, then continue only when it identifies an accessible cleaning area.
What you’ll need
- Refrigerator Use and Care Guide
- Vacuum with soft brush or crevice attachment
- Soft-bristle refrigerator coil brush if approved
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
Take it step by step
- Find the model number and read its cleaning directions. Whirlpool notes that some models do not require coil cleaning and others should be handled only by a certified technician. Do not use a general method when your manual says otherwise.
- If the manual permits homeowner cleaning, protect refrigerated food as needed, then unplug the appliance or disconnect power exactly as directed. Do not move, loosen, or pull on an ice-maker water line.
- Locate the approved access area. Remove only the grille or cover the manual tells you to remove. Keep screws or clips together, and do not reach behind fixed guards or sealed panels.
- Use a vacuum with a soft brush to lift dust from the grille and accessible front surfaces. If the manual permits a coil brush, use light strokes. Avoid bending fins or tubing, and never use water or a sharp tool in this area.
- Replace the grille or cover securely, check that nothing was left underneath, then reconnect power. Make sure the refrigerator is operating normally and that its doors close fully.
Keep this in mind
A flashlight helps you see dust without pushing the vacuum attachment deeper than the manual allows.
When to ask for help
Stop and arrange appliance service if coils are inaccessible, the manual calls for certified service, a water line shifts or leaks, tubing looks damaged, a panel will not reinstall, or the refrigerator does not restart normally.
